The £1 coin was introduced into United Kingdom currency in 1983, replacing the previous one pound note which was then withdrawn.

In recognition of the new coin the Royal Mint initiated a series of limited edition sterling silver proof coins starting in 1983, each issued in their own protective capsules and within an individual case. Each coin was issued with its own certificate of authenticity from the Royal Mint.

The Royal Mint has continued to issue these limited edition coins each year since 1983 in limited edition quantities, thus making it a very special gift for 18th & 21st birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and other special occasions. As with proof sets, the current year's silver proof coins are available directly from the Royal Mint, but earlier years can only be obtained from specialist suppliers.

In 1996 the Royal Mint issued a very special complete set of silver proof coins in celebration of 25 years of decimal coinage, so if you know of someone born in 1996 this would make an especially unique limited edition present.
